Happy Father's Day! Original Sailboat in San Pedro Painting...

Happy Father's Day wishes from me at lisabellarusso.com!

"Reminders" Original 11"x14" Painting, Open Edition 8"x10" Giclee Prints, & Limited Edition Giclee ACEO Prints are available on my website here

My dad loves the ocean, so that is why I have chosen this painting for this day...  I am very lucky to have a father who has always done his best.  He helped instill in me a great love of nature.  Happy Father's Day to all of the dads out there!

Reminders was inspired by a photograph of a sailboat on the sea I took in San Pedro.  I debated on including some of the elements in the background, but decided to keep them in.  I very much enjoyed painting the ocean.  The art has a painterly realist impressionist feel.

Creatures of the Earth, Sea, and Sky: Painting the Panamanian Cosmos Part II
LACMA Exhibit Open until April 15, 2018

With a theme of real and mythical animals, the show includes a mix of ancient ceramics and 20th century textiles.  Some of the ceramics were part of chief's burials and restored from purposely broken pieces, they are glazed in styles unique to Panamanian art with some purple hues.  The textile panels are called molas and come from the modern Kuna culture.  They were traditionaly made in pairs as part of a front and back panel of a woman's blouse and thought to have protective qualities.

I found these works very appealing.  Part I is here.

Whilst I have continued to sketch daily, I spent my time getting this ready and haven't had a chance to prep my sketches yet.  I'll try to get caught up on posting my daily sketches tomorrow.

My Photograph of a Brown Butterfly at Schabarum Park & Seascape Website Update...

I took this photograph when I was visiting Schabarum Park.  I was there at the tail end of the cherry blossom season and this lovely brown, yellow gold, and white butterfly with some red accents landed near my feet before flitting off.  I'm not sure what kind of butterfly this is, only that I was happy it spent some time flying by me and stopping for a little bit.  It had such beautiful wings, perhaps they will make their way into one of my fairy paintings at some point...  I hope that you will enjoy this photo!

"CA Coast" Original Painting SOLD

In addition to loving mermaids, I have a deep love of the ocean.  This piece is inspired by Point Dume in Zuma Beach, California.  There's something about the sea I find very compelling.  The piece has a soft realist impressionist feel.  The original is sold, but I do have this piece available as prints and ACEOs!

Every week on Tuesday, I try to list a small original, some giclee art prints, and giclee LE ACEO prints at promotional prices. Visit here to see what I have available this week!

Work in Progress on Seahorses Painting Continues...

Here is another work in progress view of my painting of two seahorses, "Entwined."  I'm still puttering along.  I didn't get a chance to paint as much as I would have liked yesterday, it was more of an errands day.  I am hopeful that today will be a better day.

I'm joining in this week with Paint Party Friday.  To see more participants, please visit:

Entwined Seahorses Painting Work in Progress...

Here is a work in progress view of two seahorses that I am painting.  I've come up with a title for the painting, it is "Entwined."  Seahorses aren't very strong swimmers, so they use their tails to hold onto seaweed.  I think I might be starting the background for my next mermaid painting today, or I might just continue on with this one, I haven't decided yet...

Seahorses Painting Work in Progress...

Here is a work in progress view of two seahorses that I am painting.  Although seahorses typically are near other seahorses that are very similar in color and pattern, I've decided to make the seahorse in front a bit warmer in hue.  I've blocked the seahorse in and will be working on at least part of the pattern today.

Seahorses Painting Work in Progress, One Seahorse Almost Complete...

Here is a work in progress view of two seahorses that I am painting.  I'm taking a little break from my angel painting, I was trying to get it done to list yesterday, but that didn't quite happen.  I'm hoping I'll manage to finish her for next Tuesday, this week is a bit hectic though...  On this painting I have one seahorse with just some touch ups to do and one completely left to go.

I'm not sure if I'll have a chance to post tomorrow, so if I don't, Happy Thanksgiving if you celebrate it!

Seahorses Painting Work in Progress, the Start of a Seahorse...

Here is a work in progress view of two seahorses that I am painting.  I've started on a seahorse, in my reference, they are a dark brown and creme.  I think that would look good too, but after trying different colors in photoshop, I've decided to paint them purple.  I love purple *almost* as much as I love blue...

Kay Sage: Surrealist Artist from In Wonderland at LACMA + Seahorses WIP

A while back, I went to the LACMA show In Wonderland: The Surrealist Adventures of Women Artists in Mexico and the United States.  Here are some pieces by artist Kay Sage.  I thought her artwork was very interesting and reminded me a bit of some of Salvador Dali's pieces.  "Danger, Construction Ahead" was her first large scale painting that she did in the U.S. and it was focused on European intellectuals, some of whom Kay Sage helped to relocate due to the war.  With the last two, I'm not certain which number went with which piece, but I thought they were both fascinating.

Seahorses Painting Work in Progress, the Start of the Seaweed...

Here is a work in progress view of two seahorses that I am painting.  I've started painting the seaweed.  I still have quite a ways to go on the seaweed before I'm done, there's a bunch of it to the right of the seahorses.  I won't decide if I'm keeping the seaweed or painting over it until I'm done painting the seahorses...

Start of my Seahorses Painting Work in Progress...

Here is a work in progress view of two seahorses that I am painting.  At this point I've painted in the background, the next step will be to start in on the seaweed.  I'm not certain if I'll keep it in once I've painted the seahorses or not yet though...

A sailboat on the ocean painting, "Drifting."

This small 5"x7" original painting titled "Crossings" is inspired by a photograph I took when I was on a boat in San Pedro. It is largely ocean and sky; with a little land, a sailboat, and part of another boat to the far right.

"Drifting" is the Illustration Friday theme for the week, and this reminds me of that. A day out on the ocean with very few worries.
